Community Action Program for Children (CAPC): The CAPC program addresses the health and development of children from birth to six years of age and supports families who may be at risk for a wide variety of reasons. Weekly workshops are offered with along with snacks and child minding. CAPC is housed at the Family Resource Centre and offers weekly workshops and home visits as needed.
Program Goals:
CAPC aims to provide parents with the support they need to raise their children. The programs goals are based on the guiding principles of the Public Health Agency of Canada:
Program Components:
The program has three main components: an informal drop-in, workshops and presentations and home visits or one-to-one support when needed.
Topics covered in the workshops include: challenging behaviours; first aid; guidance and discipline; interpersonal relationships; communication; budgeting; nutrition; sign language; stress management; and sleep issues. Interspersed with these workshops are field trips, and less serious topics such as scrap- booking, fitness, reflexology, story telling and music.
Community events such as the Teddy Bear’s Picnic and National Child Day are celebrated every year. Parents have access to a community closet and vegetable garden and twice a year a huge clothes swap is offered at the Family Resource Centre. Planning sessions and focus groups are held regularly and participants are encouraged to suggest and/or facilitate workshops.
Eligibility:
Priority is given to families with low incomes; young parents; families who live in rural areas who have limited access to, or knowledge of, services; children with developmental delays, social, emotional or behavioural problems; Aboriginal children; children who have experienced neglect; and recent immigrants. This program is free of charge and open to all.
